The Family Dinner Table

I guess my journey started around the family dinner table. My dad was a union man, a strong Democrat and my idol! He enlivened our dinner conversation with bits and pieces from the newspaper, especially the headlines and the editorial page. Cries of, “Give’em Hell Harry” would issue every time dad thought the President scored a point. I would ask dad questions about the issues and he discussed them with me like an equal. He would explain issues and ask me questions and give me his opinions. I did not know I was learning history, politics, and economics — I was just talking with my dad.
I think I was about 8 or 9 when dad’s union struck Eastern Airlines. Mom was working, dad was on strike and therefore on the picket lines. As it turned out, a sitter failed to show up and dad took me with him. He made me my own little sign and I walked the picket line with him. I was incrediby proud. Read more
Richard Nixon Is Elvis?

What got me from there to here? A series of influential and rather comical events.
Four years old - I confused Richard Nixon with Elvis Presley!
Five years old - I thought Watergate was a gate preventing a body of water from flooding my town. No wonder everyone was upset that someone left it open!
Seven years old - A second grade mock election between Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. Carter won by a landslide. Only two classmates voted for Gerald Ford. GERALD Phillips and Tim FORD! I immediately climbed up on my desk, pointed to them, and exposed their little “voting by name association” game. They denied it, of course.
Ten years old - My best friend told me he was a Democrat and wanted to be President like John F. Kennedy. I thought that was pretty silly. Everyone knew Jimmy Carter was the President!
High school - I played Ronald Reagan in a mock debate just so I could imitate him. “Well… I don’t recall…”
